Do You Wonder Who You Are?

identity Aug 09, 2021

This is a written summary of my latest video, for those that prefer to read than watch.  If you’d prefer to watch, you can find the video here.

Several months ago….I shared a post called “Remembering Who You Are.”  It’s such an important topic that I’m sharing it again here.  Right now, I’m hosting a free online event called “Your Time is Now”.  If you’ve missed it, you can find the replays for the next few days in the Power in Stillness Facebook Group.

You see, I believe we are all born KNOWING who we are – and probably why we are here.  So, why do so many of us get to a point (or ten😀) in our lives where we don’t know who we are?

From the moment we have any way of understanding communication from others, we are told what a good boy or a bad girl is.  That may help to keep us physically safe, but it may also drive us away from who we are.  The older we get, the more our parents, our teachers, and our society tell us to act a certain way or to be a certain type of person.  There usually isn’t malice here.  Everyone is just doing the best they can with the knowledge that has shaped them throughout their lives.  In other words “we’ve always done it that way.”

How has that “taming” or “domestication” served you?  Are you living the life you imagined?  Are you fulfilled by how you are BEing in this world?  If so, that is absolutely AWESOME!  Consider yourself blessed or lucky.

For the rest of you, do you sometimes feel like a square peg in a round hole?  What if you are a different shape entirely, and neither square nor round? What then?  What if there’s another way?

The best possible outcome only happens if you remember who you’ve been all along.

Let me tell you about Isis,  the Egyptian goddess of magic.  She married her brother Osiris, but he was murdered and scattered across the land.  Isis put all those pieces of back together to bring him back to life.  In other words, she RE-MEMBERed him, and that’s what we need to do.  We need to take the pieces we know about ourselves, find more aspects we don’t yet know about, and put all those pieces together to remember who we are.  That will likely be something closer to who we were when we got to this planet.

Don’t forget that the only constant is change.  That means that every life event, every tragedy or success changes who we are.  And with each of those changes, we need to reassess who we are now.

I’ve written before about the fact that every person has the knowledge of who they are within, and I’ve covered a few different ways you can access that knowledge.  You can use a creative practice like painting or journaling.  You can use an embodiment practice like yoga or ecstatic dance.  You can even use meditation or mindfulness.  The important thing here is to quiet your mind, and then shut up and listen to that voice inside.  You know the one.  It sounds an awful lot like….YOU.  Then, if you choose to take action of what you now know, you can come to a point where you have a deep understanding of yourself.

Remembering who you are is one of the guiding principles in my signature Wonderland process.  We’ll be covering the first few steps at our first in-person retreat since the beginning of the pandemic on September 10-12 at Moon Meadows Farm in Kearneysville, WV.  If you’d like to join us, reservations are open until the limited spots are taken.  You can find all the details here.

All my life, no matter what change I’ve experienced, I’ve been able to use journaling to remember who I am, begin to understand what I can learn from this change, and how my experience can help other people going through something similar.  Get my free prompts, “Journaling for Answers,” and start finding your own answers within.
